A few slightly risqué entries were received this week (!). I’m considering a separate page for X-rated X-word clues for such things, but we’ll see.
In the meanwhile, many thanks for all your entries this week.
This week’s commended (always in no particular order):
Two by the prolific Stephen Clarke, of Sydney:
He was impossible to bear at bridge (8) HORATIUS
Writer’s scrawl I translated into poem (5,5) OSCAR WILDE
Kieron Dineen, Newport, for: Huge dent is bad for your health (10) GESUNDHEIT
Barnaby Page, Harwich, for: Plug working better after commercial (7) ADAPTER
P Krishnamurthy, Bangalore, for: Error by a cricketer (4) SLIP
Tom Latter, London, for: It’s ideal when you start with 1 across (6) UTOPIA
Mark Hanley, Telford, for: Remixed song may be a great earner? (9) MONEYBAGS
Sil van den Hoek, Cambridge, for: Ring of large animals (not small ones) in shade (9) (TELEPHONE)
This week’s winners:
BRONZE: Well, I’m never quite sure about using ‘S as part of the solution in this manner, but Sil’s tagged it on to a very nice idea - Sil van den Hoek, Cambridge, for: Winter sport’s flight announcement (12) SNOWBOARDING
For me, the top two were tough to separate, but I eventually chose the winner on account of its accessibility to a larger solving audience, though both clues are lovely:
SILVER: Neat imagery from Michael Kennedy, Figtree, for: Die of puzzlement? (6,4) RUBIK’S CUBE
AND THE WINNER!

GOLD: A worthy gold medal for surface reading and construction, from Geoff Evans, Bury: Shrink-wrapped master copy (9) REPRODUCE
Well done to all winners, and to those commended. Do keep having a go if you haven’t yet had a mention. I do read all clues, and am delighted by all your contributions.!
All the best,
John (Paul)
